Before You Leave Home

A little prep saves you twenty minutes at the counter. Reserve your lane online from our homepage, especially if you’re coming Saturday afternoon. Then pack:

  • A government-issued photo ID. Everyone who shoots signs a waiver.
  • Closed-toe shoes. Hot brass and sandals do not mix.
  • Eye and ear protection, if you own it. If not, we have both.
  • Your firearm, unloaded and cased, if you’re bringing one. Leave the magazine out.
  • Ammunition that meets our rules. Check the range safety rules for caliber and load restrictions before you buy.

No gun? No problem. Our firearm rentals cover the common pistol and rifle platforms.

At the Counter: About 15 Minutes

Walk in, and a staff member greets you. We check your ID, you sign the waiver, and we assign your lane.

Tell us if it’s your first time. We’ll slow down, explain range commands, and show you how the target carrier works before you load anything. Brand-new shooters should also read our first-time shooters page before arriving.

Renting? Pick a gun, buy ammo for it, and grab targets. We’ll match the caliber for you.

On the Lane

New shooter firing a handgun on an indoor lane at Capitol Range while an instructor watches
An instructor stays close on a first visit, so you’re never figuring it out alone.

A range safety officer (RSO) watches the line the entire time you shoot. Here’s what that looks like in practice:

  • You uncase and load only at your lane, muzzle pointed downrange.
  • Your finger stays off the trigger until your sights are on the target.
  • When the RSO calls “cease fire,” you stop, unload, and step back. Immediately.
  • You leave dropped brass alone during live fire. Sweep it up afterward.

It’s loud. Ear protection makes it comfortable, and double protection (plugs under muffs) helps if you’re sensitive to noise.

After You Shoot

Unload, show clear, and case your firearm before you leave the lane. Return rentals to the counter. Then wash your hands before you eat or drink; that’s good habit at any indoor range.

Plenty of guests stick around. The True North Firearm Center sells firearms, ammo and gear in the same building, and our gunsmith services handle cleaning and repairs. Liked a rental? Ask about buying one just like it.

Want More Than Paper Targets?

Three upgrades worth knowing about:

  1. Digital Live Fire Range: real rounds at interactive screens with drills, games and shoot/no-shoot scenarios.
  2. Firearms training: from Handgun 101 to the NC concealed carry class.
  3. Range memberships: the best value if you plan to shoot more than a couple of times a month.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need a reservation?

No. Walk-ins are welcome. Weekends and evenings fill up, so we recommend booking online for those times.

Can I bring my own gun and ammo?

Yes. Bring your firearm unloaded and cased, and check our range rules for allowed calibers and ammunition before your visit.

I’ve never shot before. Can I still come?

Absolutely. Tell us at check-in and our staff will walk you through safety, range commands and your rental before you fire a shot.

How loud is an indoor range?

Very loud without protection. Ear protection is required, and wearing earplugs under earmuffs makes it comfortable for most people.

Can kids shoot at Capitol Range?

Minors must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian, and age limits apply to some activities. Call (919) 412-4279 before you bring a young shooter.

Can I try a gun before I buy it?

Yes. Rent it on the range, then talk to the True North Firearm Center team about buying the same model.
