We know that the process can feel a little overwhelming at first. That is why we put together this complete guide on what to expect, how to prepare, and how to pass your class with flying colors!

North Carolina Concealed Carry Permit: The Basics

Before you can carry a concealed handgun, you need a concealed carry permit NC officially recognizes. Let’s start with the basic rules to make sure you are ready to apply.

Who Can Apply?

To qualify for an NC pistol permit for concealed carry, you must be at least 21 years old. You also need to be a United States citizen or a lawful permanent resident. Furthermore, you must have been a resident of North Carolina for at least 30 days before you submit your application.

NC vs. Federal Requirements

While federal laws set the baseline for who can own a gun (like prohibiting convicted felons), North Carolina has its own specific rules for carrying concealed. The state requires you to complete an approved training course (like ours!) and pass a background check conducted by your local sheriff’s office. It is important to remember that state laws dictate where you can and cannot carry, even with a permit.

Current Reciprocity States

One of the best perks of an NC permit is that it travels well! North Carolina has reciprocity agreements with many other states. This means if you travel to a state like Virginia or South Carolina, they will legally recognize your NC permit. Always double-check the laws of the state you are visiting, as reciprocity agreements can change.

NC Concealed Carry Requirements, Costs & Common Questions

We get a lot of great questions from our students! Let’s clear up some of the most common topics regarding nc concealed carry requirements and local rules.

  • Concealed Carry Permit NC Cost: Taking the class is your first step, which has its own fee. After you pass, the application fee you pay to the sheriff’s office is typically around $90, which includes the cost of fingerprinting.
  • NC Concealed Carry Reciprocity: As mentioned, your permit is valid in almost 40 other states! This nc concealed carry reciprocity makes traveling with your firearm much easier, but always verify local laws before crossing state lines.
  • Wake County Pistol Permit: If you live in the capital area, you will be applying for a wake county pistol permit specifically for concealed carry. The Wake County Sheriff’s Office handles all the paperwork, fingerprinting, and background checks for residents in their jurisdiction.
  • North Carolina Gun Laws: North Carolina gun laws require you to always carry your physical permit and a valid photo ID whenever you are carrying concealed. You must also disclose that you are armed if you are stopped by a police officer.
  • NC CCW Renewal: Your permit is valid for five years. For your nc ccw renewal, you do not need to take the 8-hour class again, but you must apply for renewal before your current permit expires to avoid starting over!
  • NC Firearms Laws: Understanding nc firearms laws is crucial. Our class deeply covers off-limit areas like schools, federal buildings, and private businesses that post “No Weapons” signs.

Tips for Passing the NC Concealed Carry Course

We want you to succeed! Here are a few insider tips to make your class day a breeze.

Practice Before You Arrive

If you want to feel extra prepared, consider booking a private practice session with one of our instructors beforehand. We can review basic safety and help you get comfortable with your grip and stance.

What to Wear and Bring

Safety first! Wear closed-toe shoes and a shirt with a high neckline (to keep hot brass from bouncing down your shirt). Bring a pen, a notebook, and a great attitude! If you need eye or ear protection, you can always grab some from the True North Firearm Center inside our facility before class starts.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

The biggest mistake is overthinking it! Listen carefully to the instructors, keep your finger off the trigger until you are ready to shoot, and always keep the gun pointed in a safe direction. If you just follow instructions, you will do fantastic.
