RANGE RULES AND POLICIES

General Guidance

  • Ask staff if unsure about safety, firearms handling, or range procedures.

  • Following these rules ensures a safe, enjoyable experience for all shooters.

  • Capitol Range & Firearms (CRF) reserves the right to deny participation due to safety concerns. 

General Conduct

  • Valid government-issued ID required for entry.

  • Shooters 18+ may shoot unsupervised.

  • Children 10–17 must be accompanied by a guardian 21+.

  • Only controlled, supervised firing allowed.

  • Automatic fire, FRT, or binary triggers require management approval.

  • Follow all Range Safety Officer (RSO) commands – the RSO has final authority.

  • Maximum 3 shooters per lane with only one firing at a time.

  • No food, drinks, gum, or smoking on the range.

  • Dispose of all trash in designated bins.

  • Clothing must cover the body adequately; tank tops, spaghetti straps, low-cut tops, open-toed shoes, flip-flops, and uncovered boots are prohibited.

Firearms Safety

  • Always follow the Four Firearm Safety Rules:

    1. Treat every firearm as loaded.

    2. Point firearms in a safe direction.

    3. Keep your finger off the trigger until ready.

    4. Be aware of your target and what is beyond.

  • Firearms must remain unloaded until instructed to load on the firing line.

  • Keep firearms cased or holstered until on the firing line.

  • Place firearms on the bench with muzzles downrange and actions open until ready.

  • Do not handle firearms behind the firing line.

  • If a firearm is dropped or malfunctions, place it safely on the bench and notify range personnel.

  • Never leave firearms unattended.

  • No holster draws unless qualified by a RSO.

Firing Lane Rules

  • Fire only at your assigned target. No cross-lane shooting.

  • No unaimed fire, hip shooting, or dangling firearms.

  • During a “CEASE FIRE!”, immediately bench your firearm muzzle downrange and follow RSO instructions.

  • After shooting, unload and case firearms at the shooting point.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • Eye and ear protection is mandatory at all times.

  • Clothing must prevent contact with ejected brass.

Ammunition Policy

  • Allowed calibers:
    • Pistols: All calibers.
    • Rifles: Up to 5.56 on all lanes; up to .308 on Red Bay.
    • Shotguns: Slugs only.
  • Only brass-cased ammunition permitted.

  • Prohibited ammo: steel, bi-metal, steel-core, green tip, armor-piercing, tracer, or incendiary rounds.

  • CRF range rentals require ammo purchased at CRF.

  • Ask staff if unsure about ammunition type

Youth Participation

  • Minimum age: 10 years old (parental discretion applies).

  • Children must be able to hold and aim the firearm safely from the bench.

  • Shooters under 18 must be accompanied by a parent/guardian on the lane at all times.
